The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is a scrambler motorcycle from Royal Enfield. It is currently on sale. Scramblers blend retro styling with light off-road ability, usually with wide handlebars and dual-purpose tyres. With a 443 cc engine it sits in the 250–450 cc class.
Power comes from a 443 cc single-cylinder air-cooled fuel-injected engine that makes 25.4 bhp at 6,250 rpm and 34 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Peak torque arrives low in the rev range, at 4,000 rpm, which makes it relaxed to ride in traffic. Its stroke is longer than its bore (81 x 86 mm), a long-stroke layout that generally favours low-down pulling power. Divide power by kerb weight and it has about 131 PS per tonne; by that measure, it is lively, with easy overtakes and relaxed highway speeds. The claimed top speed is 120 km/h. It has electric start.
It has a 6-speed manual gearbox with a 1-down, 5-up shift pattern, and a chain carries drive to the rear wheel. It uses a wet multi-plate clutch.
It is built around a Half-duplex split cradle frame. Suspension is by telescopic, 41 mm forks at the front and monoshock with linkage at the rear. Braking is by a 300 mm disc at the front and a 240 mm disc at the rear, with dual-channel ABS. ABS on both wheels keeps either tyre from locking under hard braking. It rides on spoke/alloys wheels with tubeless tyres.
The seat is 795 mm off the ground, which is about average and suits most riders. It weighs 196 kg ready to ride, which is on the heavy side, so moving it by hand takes some effort. Ground clearance is 200 mm — plenty for broken roads and tall speed breakers. It is 2,165 mm long, with 1,460 mm between the axles. It carries 15 L of fuel.
Equipment includes a digital - analogue cluster instrument console, an LED headlamp, USB charging port, gear position indicator, mobile app connectivity, daytime running lamps and service due indicator. Safety equipment includes side-stand warning, engine kill switch, low fuel indicator and malfunction indicator.
The manufacturer's warranty is 3 years or 30,000 km. It comes with 4 free services, the first due at 500 km or 45 days. For the Royal Enfield Scram 440, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹2,799 doorstep service.
It is best suited to riders who want retro style as much as performance.
Recommended tyre pressures are 25 psi front and 32 psi rear riding alone, and 27 psi front and 34 psi rear with a pillion. The published service intervals are 1st service at 500 km or 45 days, 2nd service at 5000 km or 180 days, 3rd service at 10000 km or 365 days and 4th service at 15000 km or 540 days. Its chain drive needs regular cleaning, lubrication and slack adjustment.
