About the Yamaha RX100

Overview

The Yamaha RX100 is a commuter motorcycle from Yamaha. It was launched in 1985 and has since been discontinued (production ended around 1996). Mechiee still services it at your doorstep. Commuter bikes are built for everyday riding: economical, easy to handle and inexpensive to run and maintain. With a 98 cc engine it sits in the entry-level 100–110 cc commuter class.

Engine and performance

Power comes from a 98 cc single-cylinder air-cooled carburetted engine that makes 11 PS at 7,500 rpm and 10.39 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. The claimed top speed is 110 km/h. It has kick start only.

Gearbox

It has a 4-speed manual gearbox, and a chain carries drive to the rear wheel.

Chassis, brakes and tyres

Suspension is by telescopic fork at the front and swing arm (Adjustable 5 positions) at the rear. Braking is by a drum at the front and a drum at the rear. It rides on 18-inch spoke wheels — 2.50-18 at the front and 2.75-18 at the rear.

Size, comfort and range

The seat is 765 mm off the ground, which is low and makes it easy to put your feet down. Ground clearance is 136 mm — low, so take speed breakers and steep ramps slowly. It is 1,965 mm long, with 1,245 mm between the axles. It carries 10 L of fuel.

Features and equipment

Equipment includes an analogue instrument console, a halogen headlamp, 7-port Torque Induction two-stroke engine and wire-spoked wheels.

Owning one

The manufacturer's warranty is 2 years. For the Yamaha RX100, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹999 doorstep service.

Who it suits

It is best suited to daily commuting and riders who put running costs first. Its low seat also makes it approachable for shorter and newer riders.

Care notes for this model

Its chain drive needs regular cleaning, lubrication and slack adjustment. Being carburetted, it benefits from an occasional carburettor clean, especially if it has stood unused.

Maintaining the Yamaha RX100

  • Routine servicing

Follow the schedule in the owner's manual for your exact variant and year. A regular service is the cheapest way to catch small problems before they become expensive ones.

  • Engine oil & filter

Engine oil is the single most important consumable to keep fresh. Top up between services if the level drops, and change it on schedule.

  • Brake inspection

With Drum and Drum brakes, check pad or shoe wear, lever and pedal free play, and braking feel at every service.

  • Chain cleaning & lubrication

A clean, correctly tensioned and lubricated chain lasts longer and wastes less power. Check slack regularly, especially after riding in rain or dust.

  • Air filter & spark plug

A clogged air filter or worn spark plug shows up as hard starting, weak throttle response and poorer fuel economy. Both are checked at a regular service and replaced when worn.

  • Tyre inspection

This bike runs 2.50-18 / 2.75-18 tyres. Check pressure, tread depth and sidewalls, and replace tyres that are worn or cracked.

  • Battery & electricals

Weak starting, dim lights or a flickering console are early signs the battery or charging system needs a look.
