The TVS Jupiter is a scooter from TVS Motor. It was launched in 2013 and is still on sale. Scooters are made for easy city riding: automatic, step-through and usually with storage under the seat. With a 113.3 cc engine it sits in the everyday 100–110 cc scooter class.
Power comes from a 113.3 cc single-cylinder air-cooled fuel-injected engine that makes 8.02 PS at 6,500 rpm and 9.2 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Peak torque arrives low in the rev range, at 5,000 rpm, which makes it relaxed to ride in traffic. Its stroke is longer than its bore (51 mm x 55.5 mm), a long-stroke layout that generally favours low-down pulling power. Divide power by kerb weight and it has about 76 PS per tonne; by that measure, there is enough go for confident city riding and relaxed highway cruising. The claimed top speed is 82 km/h. It has both electric and kick start.
It uses an automatic (CVT) transmission, so there are no gears or clutch to work — you twist the throttle and go.
It is built around a high rigidity underbone type frame. Suspension is by telescopic hydraulic forks at the front and twin tube emulsion type shock absorber with 3 step adjustment at the rear. Braking is by a 130 mm drum at the front and a 130 mm drum at the rear, with a combined braking system (SBT). Using the rear brake lever also applies some front brake, which shortens stops for riders who lean on the rear brake. It rides on 12-inch sheet metal wheels with tubeless tyres, 90/90-12 at both ends.
The seat is 790 mm off the ground, which is about average and suits most riders. It weighs 106 kg ready to ride, light enough to push around and park easily. Ground clearance is 163 mm — enough for most speed breakers. It is 1,848 mm long, with 1,275 mm between the axles. Its 5.1 L fuel tank and claimed mileage of 48-64 kmpl work out to roughly 326 km per tankful on paper; real-world range is usually lower.
Equipment includes an analogue instrument console, an LED headlamp, Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, USB charging port, call and SMS alerts, distance-to-empty readout, daytime running lamps, real-time mileage indicator and service due indicator, among others. Safety equipment includes side-stand warning, low fuel indicator and malfunction indicator.
The manufacturer's warranty is 5 years/50000 kms. It comes with 3 free services, the first due at 500-750 km or 60 days. For the TVS Jupiter, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹899 doorstep service.
It is best suited to city errands and riders who would rather not shift gears.
Recommended tyre pressures are 24 psi front and 32 psi rear riding alone, and 24 psi front and 36 psi rear with a pillion. The published service intervals are 1st service at 500-750 km or 60 days, 2nd service at 5500-6000 km or 180 days and 3rd service at 11500-12000 km or 365 days.
