The KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is a motorcycle from KTM. It is currently on sale. With a 1,301 cc engine it sits in the big-bike, 800 cc-plus class.
Power comes from a 1,301 cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that makes 158 bhp at 8,750 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Its bore is wider than its stroke (108 mm x 71 mm), a short-stroke layout that generally favours higher revs. Divide power by kerb weight and it has about 641 PS per tonne; by that measure, its performance is at superbike level and rewards an experienced rider. The claimed top speed is 230 km/h. It has electric start.
It has a 6-speed manual gearbox with a 1-down, 5-up shift pattern, and a chain carries drive to the rear wheel. Its slipper clutch lightens the lever and stops the rear wheel hopping when you downshift hard.
It is built around a tubular space frame. At the front, the suspension is WP SAT (semi-active technology) Upside-Down Ø 48 mm forks. At the rear, it is WP SAT (semi-active technology) shock absorber. Braking is by a 320 mm disc at the front and a 267 mm disc at the rear, with dual-channel ABS. ABS on both wheels keeps either tyre from locking under hard braking. It rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels with tubeless tyres — 120/70 - ZR19 at the front and 170/60 - ZR17 at the rear.
The seat is 869 mm off the ground, which is tall — shorter riders should try it before buying. It weighs 250 kg ready to ride, which is heavy, so parking and tight U-turns need care. Ground clearance is 223 mm — plenty for broken roads and tall speed breakers. The wheelbase is 1,557 mm. Its 23 L fuel tank and claimed mileage of 17.5 kmpl work out to roughly 403 km per tankful on paper; real-world range is usually lower.
Equipment includes 7 " TFT Display, an LED projector headlamp, USB charging port, call and SMS alerts, distance-to-empty readout, gear position indicator, service due indicator, ride-by-wire throttle, tyre pressure monitoring and shift light, among others. Safety equipment includes engine kill switch, side-stand engine cut-off, side-stand warning, hazard light switch, traction control and malfunction indicator. It has three riding modes: Sport, Street and Rain and Off-Road.
The manufacturer's warranty is 50,000 km or 2 years. For the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹4,499 doorstep service.
Its tall seat suits taller riders best. With this much performance, it is better as a step-up bike than a first bike.
Recommended tyre pressures are 35 psi front and 42 psi rear, solo or with a pillion. Its chain drive needs regular cleaning, lubrication and slack adjustment.
