The Indian Chief is a cruiser motorcycle from Indian Motorcycle. It is currently on sale. Cruisers are built for relaxed riding, typically with a low seat, a laid-back posture and an engine that pulls from low revs. With a 1,890 cc engine it sits in the big-bike, 800 cc-plus class.
Power comes from a 1,890 cc twin-cylinder air-cooled fuel-injected engine that makes 85 PS at 4,500 rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 2,900 rpm. Peak torque arrives low in the rev range, at 2,900 rpm, which makes it relaxed to ride in traffic. Its stroke is longer than its bore (101 mm x 113 mm), a long-stroke layout that generally favours low-down pulling power. Divide power by kerb weight and it has about 241 PS per tonne; by that measure, it is lively, with easy overtakes and relaxed highway speeds. The claimed top speed is 185 km/h. It has electric start.
It has a 6-speed manual gearbox with a 1-down, 5-up shift pattern. It uses a wet multi-plate clutch.
It is built around a cast aluminum frame with integrated air box frame. Suspension is by telescopic fork, 119 mm - cartridge type at the front and single shock, 94 mm at the rear. Braking is by a 300 mm disc at the front and a 300 mm disc at the rear, with dual-channel ABS. ABS on both wheels keeps either tyre from locking under hard braking. It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels with tubeless tyres — 130/90-16 at the front and 180/65-16 at the rear.
The seat is 660 mm off the ground, which is low and makes it easy to put your feet down. It weighs 352 kg ready to ride, which is heavy, so parking and tight U-turns need care. Ground clearance is 140 mm — adequate, though tall speed breakers need care. It is 2,630 mm long, with 1,730 mm between the axles. It carries 20.8 L of fuel.
Equipment includes an analogue and digital instrument console, a halogen headlamp, gear position indicator, daytime running lamps and low oil indicator. Safety equipment includes engine kill switch, hazard light switch and automatic headlamp on.
For the Indian Chief, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹19,999 doorstep service.
It is best suited to relaxed riding and unhurried weekend trips. Its low seat also makes it approachable for shorter and newer riders.
