About the Triumph Speed Twin 900

Overview

The Triumph Speed Twin 900 is a scrambler motorcycle from Triumph. It was launched in 2016 and is still on sale. Scramblers blend retro styling with light off-road ability, usually with wide handlebars and dual-purpose tyres. With a 900 cc engine it sits in the big-bike, 800 cc-plus class.

Engine and performance

Power comes from a 900 cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled fuel-injected engine that makes 65 PS at 7,500 rpm and 80 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. Peak torque arrives low in the rev range, at 3,800 rpm, which makes it relaxed to ride in traffic. Its bore is wider than its stroke (84.6 mm x 80 mm), a short-stroke layout that generally favours higher revs. Divide power by kerb weight and it has about 301 PS per tonne; by that measure, it is genuinely fast, well beyond everyday traffic speeds. The claimed top speed is 180 km/h. It has electric start.

Gearbox

It has a 5-speed manual gearbox with a 1-down, 4-up shift pattern, and a chain carries drive to the rear wheel. It uses a wet multi-plate clutch.

Chassis, brakes and tyres

Its frame is tubular steel, with steel cradles. At the front, the suspension is Ø 43 mm upside-down marzocchi forks, 120 mm wheel travel. At the rear, it is twin marzocchi RSUs with external reservoirs and adjustable preload, 116 mm wheel travel rear suspension. Braking is by a 320 mm disc at the front and a 255 mm disc at the rear, with dual-channel ABS. ABS on both wheels keeps either tyre from locking under hard braking. It rides on 18-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels with tubeless tyres — 100/90-18 at the front and 150/70-17 at the rear.

Size, comfort and range

The seat is 780 mm off the ground, which is about average and suits most riders. It weighs 216 kg ready to ride, which is on the heavy side, so moving it by hand takes some effort. Ground clearance is 130 mm — low, so take speed breakers and steep ramps slowly. It is 2,090 mm long, with 1,435 mm between the axles. Its 12 L fuel tank and claimed mileage of 24 kmpl work out to roughly 288 km per tankful on paper; real-world range is usually lower.

Features and equipment

Equipment includes a digital instrument console, an LED headlamp, USB charging port, cruise control and daytime running lamps. Safety equipment includes side-stand warning, engine kill switch, traction control and low fuel indicator. It has two riding modes: Rain and Road.

Warranty terms: Unlimited km or 2 years. For the Triumph Speed Twin 900, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹7,999 doorstep service.

Who it suits

It is best suited to riders who want retro style as much as performance. Its low seat also makes it approachable for shorter and newer riders. With this much performance, it is better as a step-up bike than a first bike.

Care notes for this model

Recommended tyre pressures are 32 psi front and 36 psi rear, solo or with a pillion. Its chain drive needs regular cleaning, lubrication and slack adjustment.

Maintaining the Triumph Speed Twin 900

  • Routine servicing

Follow the schedule in the owner's manual for your exact variant and year. A regular service is the cheapest way to catch small problems before they become expensive ones.

  • Engine oil & filter

Engine oil is the single most important consumable to keep fresh. Top up between services if the level drops, and change it on schedule.

  • Brake inspection

With Disc, 320 mm and Disc, 255 mm brakes, check pad or shoe wear, lever and pedal free play, and braking feel at every service.

  • Chain cleaning & lubrication

A clean, correctly tensioned and lubricated chain lasts longer and wastes less power. Check slack regularly, especially after riding in rain or dust.

  • Coolant & cooling system

A liquid-cooled engine relies on coolant. Check the level and look over hoses and the radiator for leaks or damage, and replace coolant as the owner's manual directs.

  • Air filter & spark plug

A clogged air filter or worn spark plug shows up as hard starting, weak throttle response and poorer fuel economy. Both are checked at a regular service and replaced when worn.

  • Disc brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Have its level and condition checked and change it on the interval in the owner's manual.

  • Tyre inspection

This bike runs 100/90-18 / 150/70-17 tyres. Check pressure, tread depth and sidewalls, and replace tyres that are worn or cracked.

  • Battery & electricals

The battery is listed as Maintenance Free. Weak starting, dim lights or a flickering console are early signs the battery or charging system needs a look.

Triumph Speed Twin 900 specs explained

What the technical terms on this page mean.

ABS
Anti-lock braking system. It stops a wheel locking up during hard braking so the rider can keep steering. A single-channel system works on one wheel, usually the front; a dual-channel system works on both.
OHC / SOHC / DOHC
How the engine's valves are operated. OHC and SOHC mean one overhead camshaft; DOHC means two, which usually allows higher revs and more power from the same size.
Fuel injection
Petrol is delivered by an electronically controlled injector instead of a carburettor, which helps with easy starting and steady fuel economy.
Liquid cooling
Coolant circulates through the engine and a radiator, keeping temperatures steadier than air alone, especially in traffic or under load.
Cruise control
Holds a set speed without you holding the throttle open, which reduces fatigue on longer, steady stretches.
Upside-down fork
A front fork mounted the opposite way round to a conventional one, with the thicker tubes at the top. It is typically stiffer under braking and cornering.
Tubeless tyres
Tyres with no inner tube. A small puncture usually loses air slowly, which makes roadside repair easier.
Kerb weight
The weight of the bike ready to ride, with its fluids and fuel, but without a rider or luggage.
Bore x stroke
The cylinder's width and the piston's travel. A larger bore relative to stroke tends to favour revs; a longer stroke tends to favour low-speed pull.
Compression ratio
How much the fuel-air mixture is squeezed before it is ignited. It is one of the factors behind an engine's efficiency and power.
