The BMW Motorrad R 12 is a motorcycle from BMW Motorrad. It is currently on sale. With a 1,170 cc engine it sits in the big-bike, 800 cc-plus class.
Power comes from a 1,170 cc twin-cylinder air- and oil-cooled engine that makes 93.7 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 109.8 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Its bore is wider than its stroke (101 mm x 73 mm), a short-stroke layout that generally favours higher revs. Divide power by kerb weight and it has about 419 PS per tonne; by that measure, it is genuinely fast, well beyond everyday traffic speeds. The claimed top speed is 215 km/h. It has electric start.
It has a 6-speed manual gearbox with a 1-down, 5-up shift pattern, and a shaft carries drive to the rear wheel.
It is built around a tubular space frame. At the front, the suspension is Upside-down telescopic fork, diameter 45 mm. At the rear, it is cast aluminum single-sided swing arm with paralever brace. Braking is by a 310 mm disc at the front and a 265 mm disc at the rear, with dual-channel ABS. ABS on both wheels keeps either tyre from locking under hard braking. It rides on 19-inch front and 16-inch rear alloy wheels with tubeless tyres — 100/90 - R19 at the front and 150/80 - R16 at the rear.
The seat is 754 mm off the ground, which is low and makes it easy to put your feet down. It weighs 227 kg ready to ride, which is heavy, so parking and tight U-turns need care. It is 2,200 mm long, with 1,520 mm between the axles. Its 14 L fuel tank and claimed mileage of 19.6 kmpl work out to roughly 274 km per tankful on paper; real-world range is usually lower.
Equipment includes a semi-digital with brightness control instrument console, an LED headlamp, USB charging port, call and SMS alerts, gear position indicator, service due indicator, keyless lock/unlock, shift light, engine temperature indicator and low fuel indicator, among others. Safety equipment includes engine kill switch, side-stand engine cut-off, side-stand warning, hazard light switch, traction control and malfunction indicator. It has a roll and Rock riding mode.
Warranty terms: Unlimited km or 3 years. For the BMW Motorrad R 12, Mechiee offers a fixed ₹13,999 doorstep service.
Its low seat also makes it approachable for shorter and newer riders. With this much performance, it is better as a step-up bike than a first bike.
Recommended tyre pressures are 33 psi front and 36 psi rear riding alone, and 36 psi front and 42 psi rear with a pillion. Its shaft drive is nearly maintenance-free; the final-drive oil is changed at long intervals.
