Replace worn clutch plates and related components to eliminate slipping, dragging, or juddering and restore proper power transfer.
When clutch adjustment alone doesn't fix shifting problems, the clutch plates themselves may be worn out — a natural result of the friction that lets the clutch do its job over tens of thousands of kilometres. Worn plates can no longer grip properly, leading to slipping (revs rising without matching acceleration), dragging (difficulty shifting or engaging gears), or a juddering feeling when pulling away. Clutch replacement involves opening the clutch assembly, fitting new friction and steel plates (and springs, if needed), and reassembling to factory tolerances.
90–150 minutes
Typically needed every 25,000–40,000 km depending on riding style, or sooner with frequent heavy loads or aggressive riding
Riders experiencing clutch slipping or dragging that clutch adjustment alone hasn't resolved.
The mechanic confirms clutch wear is the actual cause of the shifting issue before opening the assembly.
The clutch cover is opened and the existing plate pack is removed.
Worn friction and steel plates are replaced with new ones; springs are checked and replaced if weak.
The clutch assembly is reassembled and the clutch cable is re-adjusted to the correct free-play.
A test ride confirms smooth engagement with no slipping or dragging.
If your clutch slips (revs rise without matching acceleration) or drags even after adjustment, the plates themselves are likely worn and need replacing, not just re-tensioning.
It varies widely with riding style, but 25,000–40,000 km is a common range. Frequent heavy loads, aggressive acceleration, or riding the clutch in traffic can shorten this.
Clutch replacement typically requires garage tools and a clean workspace to do properly, so it's usually completed at a partner garage rather than purely at your doorstep.
A burning smell during heavy traffic is often a sign of clutch slippage from worn plates, and replacing them usually resolves it — but the mechanic will confirm the exact cause first.
The full plate pack is usually replaced together to ensure even wear and consistent engagement, since mixing old and new plates can cause uneven grip.
Typically 90 to 150 minutes, depending on your bike model and how accessible the clutch assembly is.
If your bike is still under manufacturer warranty, check whether it requires authorised service centre work for warranty-covered repairs. Mechiee mechanics can still service out-of-warranty or self-funded repairs on any bike.
